Emerging UK talent MIYA MIYA have mastered a sound that borders on distressed glamour, combining an exhilarating blend of bulging drums, cavernous guitars and salient bass-lines.
Growing up listening to classic artists like Fleetwood Mac, Queen and Jeff Buckley, their latest offering ‘Hometown’ follows the story of someone who’s completely lost all hope, selling themselves short and making bad decisions. After honing their craft behind the scenes, 2020 has marked a new and exciting campaign from an undeniably talented collective. We caught up with the band to talk about their latest release and their journey into music.
MIYA MIYA, its so good to talk to you, there’s certainly a lot of buzz around you guys at the moment. Your new single ‘Hometown’ is a much more ethereal and mysterious offering in comparison to your earlier records, how did the single come about and was the recording process any different to your previous work?
We’re really hyped you like it. This one was a bit different, we were working out of our friends place called Numen Studios, which has a really nostalgic vibe, we think this has definitely carried over into the track, and we’re really happy with how it turned out.
So you guys formed after meeting at university, did it take a while to gel together or was it an instant connection?
It definitely was an instant connection, as soon as we started hanging out and writing songs together, we knew it felt different to working with anyone else. We all had the same work ethic and it just felt right.
Theres an amalgamation of different styles in your music, could you pinpoint a particular artist that has inspired you the most?
It would be impossible to name just one, theres so much in fall in love with every day so we’re constantly being re-inspired. To name a few we would have to go with Fleetwood Mac, Imagine Dragons, and The Chainsmokers.
You’ve already drawn airplay from the likes of Radio 1 and I believe you’ve got what it takes to go all the way. Where would you guys like to see yourself in 5 years?
We would love to be able to travel around the world playing as many shows, to as many people as possible. A grammy or two would be the cherry on top.
If MIYA MIYA were offered an international tour with a co-headliner slot, which band/artist would you choose and why?
It would be amazing to go on tour with Harry Styles, we love his new sound and style, and we really think he’s moving pop culture in a cool direction. He seems like the kind of guy we would love to share a watermelon with backstage!
The music video is an enchantingly inspired accompaniment and really rounds this record off beautifully, are you working on new music currently or is there a plan already in place?
Thanks so much. We can’t wait to show you guys some of the new music we’ve been writing. Our new EP Cold Blood is available for Pre Order now, and is being released on the 26th June.
