At a time where music is a vital release for many as the days roll into each other, enter: Birmingham four-piece Riscas.
Their new single “Cool With It” has all the hallmarks of an indie jazz anthem, adorning speakers and Hi-Fi systems across the country. The mixture of raw, yet textured rhythm leaves the track with an excitable buzz; offering that exhilarating edge much like American rockers Vampire Weekend. After spending much of 2019 locked away in the studio writing, it’s safe to say that this new single has definitely satisfied the craving of hungry fans at a time where they needed them most.
On the whole, it demonstrates a development in both production and songwriting, as crystallised guitars grapple against crisp rolling drums: an ear worm in the nicest possible sense. The mix constantly leans onto blanket harmonic warmth, no more so than in the infectiously joyous chorus that leaves you subconsciously singing back.
Though indie-pop may be a well traversed genre, the boys have savoured a vintage and contemporary sound that resonates more with every play and offers a true sense of originality. With an impressive collection of streams, over 100,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, and a pedigree in playing alongside the likes of Pale Waves, Sam Fender and The Night Café, I believe the they have a recipe that is exciting enough to offer them the chance to make this their breakthrough year.
